Introduction to Data Management

CIT 21400 / 3 Cr. (3 Class)

Introduction to basic database development concepts. Extensive exploration of data manipulation using a relational DBMS and SQL. Students develop database applications using the most current database technologies.

What You Will Learn

Database Management Concepts

  • Understand the general concepts of data management
  • Explain basic database terminology
  • Compare and contrast the file management and database management approaches
  • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of database processing
  • Describe the relational model

Database Design                       

  • Analyze user’s information needs using an entity-relationship approach
  • Represent user’s information needs in an entity-relationship diagram
  • Define first normal form (1NF), second normal form (2NF), third normal form (3NF) and fourth normal form (4NF) and determine what form a table is in
  • Transform a table into 1NF, 2NF, 3NF and 4NF when necessary
  • Transform an entity-relationship diagram into a relational database

Query by Example 

  • Use Query-By-Example (QBE) to retrieve data from Access tables
  • Relate tables using QBE
  • Use conditions, calculated fields, and built-in functions 
  • Define multiple criteria 
  • Use the logical operators 
  • Run action queries (make table, update, delete, and append) 

Structured Query Language (SQL)

  • Create tables 
  • Insert data into a table
